Liverpool City Council has cancelled a number of events and services across the city on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 October due to Storm Austen. A yellow weather warning is currently in place across Merseyside, with strong winds affecting services and activities.
Events and Markets Cancelled
This evening's River of Light event has been cancelled in the interests of safety. The Water Street closure will no longer go ahead. Visit Liverpool social channels will provide any further event updates over the weekend.
The Cunard Building Market will not take place on Friday 23 October. Lark Lane Farmers and Craft Market, and Tuebrook Market and Car Boot Sale are cancelled on Saturday 24 October due to weather conditions.
Sports Fixtures Postponed
All fixtures on Council-owned grass pitches this weekend will not take place. The decision has been taken in the interests of safety and pitch management.
Emergency Support for Rough Sleepers
Liverpool City Council has activated its Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) to keep people safe during the inclement weather. Anyone who sees someone sleeping rough should call 0300 123 2041. The council's 24/7 outreach team will seek to provide emergency accommodation.
Safety Advice
Strong winds make driving conditions dangerous. Residents are advised to only drive if necessary and to plan ahead. High winds also increase the risk of injury when outdoors. The council recommends staying indoors as much as possible and avoiding walking or sheltering close to buildings and trees.
Residents should check on neighbours, particularly those who are elderly or live alone. Further updates are available on the Met Office weather warnings and Liverpool forecast pages.
